- At what point did you decide to take your comedy career from a hobby to ‘professional’? What did you do different in your approach when you did this?
Starting in New York, everyone was already treating it like a job. So it never occurred to me as a hobby. I’ve seen peers move from all over the world to NYC with the sole purpose of becoming a pro comic. There aren’t a lot of part timers. I was lucky enough to have that energy around me from the beginning.
- What mistakes do young comedians often make from a business perspective?
Buy business cards. Or pay a lot of money for a website well before anyone has a reason to visit it.
- It seems the number of people trying stand-up comedy is growing, however, show attendance is relatively static – What can be done to get more fan interest in the local comedy scene?
Three words: T shirt cannons. I don’t really know because I’ve never been good at the promotional end of comedy. A strong social media presence or ads on podcasts might be a start. Once again, I’m a total moron in this area.
- The one thing you wish people would have told you before you started?
Finding your voice isn’t a magical, “come to Jesus” moment. It happens over time without you even knowing it. And one day, I hope it happens.
